What is preventing you from focusing? Are you overburdened by responsibility?  Are those responsibilities actions or thoughts about problems? There is a website called Flylady.  This site has a motto that says: “You can do anything for 15 minutes” If you break your job into manageable slots of 15 minutes, you can complete your jobs in baby steps and not become overwhelmed because for that given time – all you have to think about is what is on your plate for the time being and the rest of our problems will be allotted a given time to free your mind knowing that we have a time for everything.

The same goes for the things we enjoy.  If your concentration skills are hindered because you constantly put off something you enjoy doing – set the timer for 15 minutes and do that thing that makes your heart sing after which you can get back to the object of your concentration.  If it is not something that takes 15 minutes like a night out with friends – maybe you are not allowing the fun stuff in your life.  Allow yourself one night to let your hair down, release your bottled-up stress and refuel so that you can focus again.  We cannot take from an empty fuel tank. Jim Carey says that when he was in school in Canada, he was always a comedian. His teacher was smart, instead of putting a lid on his creativity (and fighting distractions) she gave him time, at the beginning to stand at the front and let out all his bottled up energy creatively. Then she would begin the class.  Well, it did wonders for his career as we see.  Same thing for us.  Perhaps we have a lot of creativity that we are not giving ourselves permission to be expressed.

If you have visual expression instead of written, then take those 5 minutes to draw whatever is in your imagination.  You can complete it later but you must allow that creativity a voice and a platform to be released. You don’t need to be rigid about the timing – maybe you need 15 minutes to release those imaginative ideas, after regular practice,  the time will get shorter while. your ideas will be come richer.  Sometimes we sit down to study after someone has upset us – Write it out and allow the emotions to surface after which you have a free mind to pay to your learning.

Write it down

Speaking of a learning cycle.  A very important tip for enhancing concentration skills is to write down what we are learning. Reading is the input of information, questions seek solutions, but when we write things down we are not only diagnosing what we learn while we learn it but also solidifying that knowledge and completing the cycle of learning.  We learn, discover the gaps in our. knowledge and fill them in as we continue to read. When we write, we begin to think and automatically become curious.  We start to want our questions answered. We begin to ask questions that we need to know the answers to:, what is the author saying. in this paragraph, what is the topic sentence, where does this take place and so on.

We naturally build a written world from our reading in a way that makes sense to us. This triggers concentration and enhances our understanding as well as recall skills. When the points are recorded, our learning shifts from passive to interactive and we recall what we have just read.  The brain grows in this way as we write new material on it. Try to write down as many relevant points as possible answering questions as you go along. In addition, our next session will be aided with a record from the previous session drawing our mind immediately back to the material. This engages our mind and our concentration is triggered.


Use both sides of the brain

As you know, the brain is divided into two hemispheres. If we can activate both sides of the brain together for every task we are using more of our brain for learning – again enhancing our concentration. The right side of the brain is creative while the left brain is logical. When we use colors the heart is connected to the brain because colors carry vibrations and those are felt while the different colors for each topic or key term cause the logical side of the brain to organize those colors into meaningful categories.
